Niyoga is a gripping story of Malar, a Tamil woman, a political refugee who fled Sri Lanka during the civil war. It revolves around a fractured immigrant family, people who left behind, especially a woman, without choice, and without a future. Malar's marriage to Ranjan, a journalist only lasted three days when unknown men abducted him. He joined the ever-growing list of missing persons who voiced for human rights in the country. In fear of their own lives, Malar and family move to Canada and settle in the suburbs of Toronto.
