In1899,EdwardH.Harriman,theheadoftheUnionPacificRailroad,organizedaseaexpeditionalongthecoastofAlaskatostudytheflora,fauna,andnaturalwondersofthearea.Harrimanalsointendedtobringbackspecimensoftheanimalsandplantsheencountered.Thegroupchosenforthevoyageincludedscientists,artists,andwriters.In2001,TomLitwin,oftheClarkScienceCenteratSmithCollege,Leadasimilarexpedition,retracingascloselyaspossibletheroutefollowedbytheHarrimanparty.Alongtheway,weseemanyofthesamepeoplesandplacesasthoseonthefirstexpedition.WealsoseethechangesthatAlaskahasenduredintheprevious100years.
